Did the
Peter Green Mod with
a spare 496R pickup that I had laying around, 11/12/2006
-
Reinstalled the factory neck
pickup to undo the Peter Green mod. Instead, added a DPDT push/pull
pot to the neck tone pot that does phase reversal on the neck pickup.
Did this so that I could still get the normal middle position tone.
It really has the same effect as the Peter Green but you can turn it on
and off. 1/8/2007

3/31/07 -Swapped the pickups
here with the Burstbuckers in a LP Classic
DC I had. Now has a Gibson Burstbucker #1 in the neck position and a
Burstbucker #2 in the bridge position. They seemed really bright in
the DC and I was curious to know whether it was the guitar or the pickups.
Adjusted the pole pieces per some threads on the LP Forum and they sound
great. Put the 496R/500T factory pickups in the DC.

4/11/07 - I've read a ton
about people using the RS Guitarworks upgrade kits so I decided to try one
for kicks. Installed it today but didn't get to play much, so I'll
post more later. It's got 2 custom pots (by CTS) for volume and 2
CTS 500k Ohm Audio taper pots for tone pots. It also comes with 2
Hovland caps supposedly specifically designed for a guitar's tone circuit.
0.015uf for the neck and 0.022uf for the bridge. Click
here for more
details.

4/20/07 - Took off the "1960"
pickguard that's stock on the classics and replaced it with a blank cream
colored one. Will also be installing pickup covers. Took off
the "Classic" truss rod cover and installed the blank one from my 61 RI SG.
Never really liked the big cursive print on this one anyway.
-
5/6/07 - Installed neck
pickup cover. Bought a Mighty Mite set before but they didn't fit
well. Then I broke down and bought a Gibson set. The neck one
dropped right on, but the bridge one has the wrong pole spacing. It
seems that on Burstbuckers, the bobbins are the same for the neck and the
bridge, so the "bridge spaced" cover doesn't fit. Will have to order
another neck one for it.
-
5/10/07 - Received the neck
spaced cover for the bridge pickup. Popped it on and it looks good.
Putting the bridge spaced one on eBay. See updated picture above.
-
5/23/07 - After putting the
covers on and playing really loud, I found that the covers made the
pickups very microphonic. I potted them and put double stick tape on
the slug bobbin like you're supposed to and they still squealed terribly.
So I got mad and pulled 'em out. I took the covers off and sold the
pickups on eBay.
-
5/24/07 - Installed a pair of
Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbuckers with nickel covers. I liked
SD's reputation, the pickups are potted, available, relatively cheap, and
come with 4-conductor wiring. So I bought them and installed them.
I found the the SD springs were too long and too course of a pitch.
In other words, the springs bottomed out on themselves before I got them
as high as I wanted them. I played one gig with them about 6/32"
from the strings and I wasn't impressed with the life in them. So I
installed the Gibson springs and jacked 'em up and now I'm pretty happy
with them. More on this later.
-
10/22/07 - Sold the Pearly
Gates pickups on eBay and bought another pair of SKATTERBRANES from Rod
Kinkade. Bought A5 magnets this time. Installed 'em and took
it out to the first gig and really liked them. I think I'm more
partial to the A2's in the ES-333,
but they're still a great pickup. Excellent PAF style sound, just a
light tendency for feedback, but still controllable.
-
11/14/07 - Added a cap as a
treble bleed circuit across the neck volume. Decided that I really
dig almost every setting on this, but the neck darkens up very quickly.
Used a 560pf just like the ES-333,
but that may be a little aggressive. Need to play some more and see.
-
11/22/07 - Added a resistor
to the treble bleed circuit to try to help keep some bottom end in it.
The cap alone was too thin towards the bottom of the dial. Also
decided I wanted it to be switchable on and off. Check out some info
on this mod here.
